Document 3: Public Record

VIDEO BEGINS TRANSCRIBING — — —

A beam of light from a window high in the slanted ceiling has slowly crept along the floor as Judy read out the diary to her subscribers. As she finishes the most recent entry, the beam finally reaches her, illuminating her box throne like a spotlight, and turning her reddish-brown hair into a deep fiery red.

She slowly lowers the old and beaten diary, hardly noticing the light, lost in thought as she sets it down next to the golden tote. Her eyes focused on the open page she's just finished, not into the frame of the camera. A notable difference because she normally focused in frame while recording videos for her channel. Her eyes are also changed by the light, tinted from dull brown to the slightest shade of copper green.

The still frame at that moment is stunning.

A lonely, sad girl—eyes red and puffy—focused entirely on an old, dirty diary. Her thoughts lost among her grandmother’s memoir and mountains of that person's old, forgotten things. Well-lit by stage lights, which—for the moment—are overwhelmed by the beam of sunlight, motes of swirling and gleaming dust falling on her from above.

In that quiet second, you can see Judy's face change—oh so subtly. Her mind working through the beginnings of what her grandmother left for her to find. First, her brow wrinkles, and her head leans a fraction to the side. Confused. Then her brow curls farther, her head rights itself, and her mouth presses to a frown. Anger? Disappointment? Last, her brow relaxes, and her frown deepens. Sadness.

Finally, she speaks. “What is this, Grandma? I… Fantasy? Am I supposed to believe this? I thought the letter thing wasn't literal, I thought it was a metaphor. Maybe Elenteir was just a different state of mind or something. You know a 'new world'. I was thinking a drug, or a cartel. At worse, I thought she was trafficked.”

She shifts back to anger, still speaking to the journal, her audience forgotten, “How could you do this to me?! You left me some mysterious letter. You promised me answers, reasons! And this is where you start, some kind of isekai? What the ~BEEP~ is this? I do true crime and unsolved case videos, Grandmother, not creative writing!”

She stands abruptly, and roughly grabs things out of the golden tote next to the diary.

First she takes out a massive sheet of paper, the size of the small crate, even folded into quarters as it is. The page crackles as she whips it through the air, the ancient paper threatening to fall apart.

“What other ~BEEP~ is in here? A ~BEEP-ING~ dragon?”

She ejects more stuff unceremoniously out of the crate, a wooden badge is slammed down on the table, followed by a thick sheaf of papers with a sticky note attached to the top page. An old, battered and dented fountain pen is tossed down next.

Finally, she has to lean down and grab something in the container with both hands. She hauls it out and, with a sweep of her elbow, knocks away the now empty plastic tote. Gaining enough space to set the object down on the coffee table. There is no slamming this down, not without risk of breaking the device, so Judy, even in her anger, takes care to gently ease it to the table.

The object sits in the center of the table like the centerpiece of a dining set, though whatever dining room is completed by such a device would look closer to an alchemist's workshop than a proper place to eat.

The first thing that would catch most viewers eyes is the massive glass-like orb in the object's center. It's almost a foot in diameter and almost completely clear, a few air bubbles or tiny flaws in the crystalline structure scatter through the sphere to mar its perfection, but externally the orb is perfectly round.

There are five golden arms that make up the second part of the device. Four serve to keep the orb suspended above the table, starting as wide 'feet' for the device, then swirling around and tightly securing the orb in place, modeled to look like vines or smoke. The last arm arcs out away from the body of the thing, distancing itself from the rest in more ways than just physical. It has a rigid and mechanical shape, instead of flowing natural contours, and comes to a sharp needle point at the end. The arm has three little mechanical knobs evenly spaced down its length, which are completely unmarked, whatever they are there to calibrate must not be something the user would need precisely measured.

“What even-?” The effort of moving the thing, and the sheer bizarreness and obvious expense of the device, throw Judy right back into her initial confusion. “How am I going to explain this to my sub-”

Judy finally looks back into the camera, a guilty expression on her face. She's remembered that she has an audience.

“Well, uhh, I’m confused.” she begins,“I guess I could edit that out but, whatever. Honestly, this is nothing like what I had expected, guys. I really should have reviewed my grandma stuff before recording, huh? Well, it is what it is, and what it is; is my grandma’s last wish.”

She has to pause again and look around the room, as if she was wondering how much around her is real.

“So... even if this is some insane fictitious account, I’m still going to cover it on the channel. I’m sorry if you guys aren't a fan of that. I’ll be ending this first video here so I can take a better look at what we are dealing with for the next one. Remember to like the video, subscribe to the channel, and pay attention to the mysteries around you. JuJu out.”

Disappears for a week and comes back with an awesome new series. I'm sending prayers for your grandma. I'm sure she's smiling down from heaven watching you do the coolest unboxing ever. I wonder what that thing Juju pulled out from the box was I've never seen anything like it before.
