When her mother is falsely accused of treason, Armaila leaves everything behind to seek an audience with the king, a cruel man that slaughtered his way to the throne. Raised in a sheltered village, she at first relishes the freedom that traveling brings her, yet soon realizes that she is ill-equipped to make the treacherous journey across the kingdom alone.
She forges an alliance with a mysterious woman from her mother’s past who is in possession of the last known dragon egg. A web of lies begins to unravel, forcing Armaila to question everything she once knew. When the egg hatches, making her the first dragon rider in centuries, Armaila must swear her allegiance to a king with a crown of blood if she is to save her mother’s life.
