Author Biography

An aspiring Canadian author who has loved creating characters and making up stories for most of her life, J. Talia "Random Syllables" Burrows seeks writing as not only as an escape, but a form of exploration and expression. While she has spent most of her time in obscurity, she is slowly attempting to step out into the light, and putting the voices in her head on speakerphone.

As an author, she tackles themes such as powerlessness, hard lessons, and self discovery. She leans towards supernatural and fantasy genres, with character driven plots. While events in her stories may be fantastical, she tries to approach them from a grounded perspective. And when it doubt, throw in some irreverent or dry humour to soften some of the edges.

Worlds collide when three scientists encounter a native of Siperon, a reclusive region, while out at sea. Their agenda is to find a way to the secluded land before anyone else, and the displaced Trosyn "Red" Nytt needs to ensure security for her future. They have until the SS Serendipity returns to port to get their answers, but Trosyn's condition is that they hear her story of how she went from a slave to being set adrift in the ocean.

The Illusion of Freedom is a fantasy novella which tells two simultaneous stories, both the events on the steamship Serendipity, and a frame story narrated by Trosyn detailing events which led to her exodus. It examines what one woman is willing to do to survive and explores themes of resilience and power dynamics in relationships.
